LIC | A Catalyst for Population and Public Health Management

LIC Services for Public Health

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Bureau of Epidemiology and Public Health Informatics (KDHE-BEPHI) recently went live with its ELR system after an extensive testing process. Virginia Barnes, director of surveillance systems for KDHE-BEPHI, sees a growing enthusiasm for ELR among hospitals across her state despite their often-barebones I.T. capability. "This is where LIC has offered assistance, helping with mapping and finding connections," she says. "The focus on Meaningful Use has motivated different resources to come together to help public health agencies, hospitals and labs come together. It's easier to compare and share solutions, and to get more interoperability."

The LIC is actively engaging with Public Health Agencies to facilitate the exchange of reportable lab events. In an effort to make this exchange as efficient and effective as possible for Public Health, the LIC has put in place several mechanisms by which we can communicate an HL7 2.5.1 formatted payload to the public health infrastructure.
